Daily Groove: The Black Keys
The Akron Ohio based duo, The Black Keys have probably been the closest to being my favorite band for awhile now. A beacon for fans of raw, unfiltered rock, capturing the essence of the blues, infusing it with a gritty, distortion-laden energy that just resonates with me for some reason.
At the heart of The Black Keys’ sound is their deep-rooted connection to Delta blues, a genre that originated in the Mississippi Delta in the early 20th century. The Delta blues, known for its emotive guitar riffs, soulful vocals, and themes of struggle and hardship, has long been a source of inspiration for musicians seeking to channel the rawness of human experience. The Black Keys have taken this inspiration and molded it into something uniquely their own, combining the soulful anguish of the blues with the energy and intensity of garage rock.
I just recently acquired several of their albums on vinyl, and look forward to long listening session.
Below are just a few of my favorites from the band, and a playlist if you care to sample more. For a really special experience, check out the Chulahoma full album (down near the bottom of the list). It is their tribute to the late great Junior Kimbrough. Amazing stuff!
